The drawback is once damaged it may be expensive to replace. Manufactured work surfaces like MDF or particleboard is the preferred surface for industry. They are warp and splinter proof and are highly resistant to oil and moisture. They are also less expensive than hardwood and can be easily replaced if damaged. Plastic worktops provide strength, chemical resistance, and are non-conductive. Plastic is great for electronics assembly, circuit board repair or any application that may be prone to spills. However plastic may be too slippery for woodworking and favor applications like ceramics work, pottery or anything that requires moisture or chemical resistance.
If space is an issue, a fold-up garage workbench takes up little room when not in use. They are often designed with cabinet space to hang tools and hardware, and the hinged bench folds into that space with its legs tucked under. When you need to work, simply unfold the top, prop up the legs and get to it. Select one with a leg system that is sturdy enough for your needs. Make sure to allow adequate space to work in when the bench is laid out.
For the DIY workbench designers out there, consider building it permanently to the exposed wall studs in your garage walls. This type of bench is, for all intensive purpose, permanent, but can easily be dismantled in needed. It gives work space far more sturdy than the types found for purchase in the hardware store, and can be customized as much as you want. Once you have a good idea on the size and location of your workbench, its time to consider storage space for tools, supplies and raw materials that you tend to work with most. You can build shelving underneath the workbench to provide enormous amounts of storage space for hobby supplies or other garage relegated storage. Cabinets or shelves above the workbench provide additional storage, or you can always use pegboard to arrange tools for hanging storage.
In addition to the main pieces of a workbench there are many add-ons that are used to increase utility. Back and End stops might be installed to prevent things from rolling off onto the floor. Drawers, shelves and risers can be added for increased storage. Electrical power strips and outlet cutouts can be incorporated into the design as well to run tools, grinders, drill presses, etc. Vises and clamps can also be added to help secure whatever you are working on. The best place to start when choosing a design is to define the intended use. Once that is established the support structure, worktop, add-ons and size can be more easily selected. There are literally thousands of available workbench designs and configurations, many of which will suit your needs and budget. When in doubt contact your supplier for assistance selecting an appropriate design.
Building your own workbench gives good practice when handling more complicated projects. Since a workbench is not a decorative piece of furniture, finish and perfection are not required. Another advantage to building your own, is that standard pre-fabricated workbenches available for purchase are mass produced in sizes that might not fit the space you have available. By building your own garage workbench, you can decide on the particular specifications for every aspect of the bench. Every feature has a purpose, and no space is wasted. If youre building from scratch or using someone elses blueprints, modified or not, youve got a sturdy piece of garage equipment that will easily surpass the quality of any mass produced, once size fits all workbench for purchase.
